total nitrogen

Reported by: guest Owned by: pyilmaz
Priority: minor Component: MIxS general
Version: 3.0 Keywords: item, nitrogen
Cc: Sensitive: no

Currently we have;
total N : total nitrogen content of the soil Units of g N/kg soil
total nitrogen : total nitrogen concentration, calculated by: total nitrogen = total dissolved nitrogen + particulate nitrogen. Can also be measured without filtering, reported as nitrogen

Is there a difference here? If so can we expand the definitions to explain that.

Reply by Jim Cole:
"The first is a standard soil method while the second, I believe, a water method. The reported units may be different and the methods are likely different. Total N in soil is usually reported as weight percentage of nitrogen as N2 (g_N2/kg_soil). Not sure how the results of the water method are presented."
My addition to this is that water column total nitrogen is generally measured in umol/L. Therefore there is a difference, and I will try to modify the descriptions to reflect that

Definitions of both total N and and total nitrogen changed. total N is applicable to solid samples, while total nitrogen is for water samples
